Did you know that 40% of people in the U.S. experience heartburn once a month at least? This is one of the digestive problems that are becoming more prevalent – even among children. It is typically caused by stomach acid that flows back into the lower part of the esophagus, resulting in discomfort and often a burning in the chest.

In addition, approximately one out of every ten Americans will develop an ulcer at some time in their life. This is an internal sore that is very slow to heal and usually develops in the digestive tract or on the membrane that lines the stomach.

Since the digestive system consists of the esophagus, the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and the anus, there are a variety of serious digestive system diseases that can affect people when the digestive system does not function properly. Problems experienced will affect other areas of the body.

Digestive system diseases can be a result of these problems. For example, cancer of the rectum or colon is topped only by lung cancer when it comes to deaths from cancer within the U.S. It is responsible for 57,000 deaths each year. There are many digestive system diseases in addition to ulcers, as mentioned.

They may include gastritis, which is caused by bacteria. The symptoms include indigestion, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea and flatulence. Unhealthy bacteria in the stomach is also thought to be responsible for rheumatoid arthritis. Although some people, by genetics are more susceptible to this disease, there are certain triggers thought to be responsible.

Gatroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD is another that causes heartburn, vomiting, and pain in the stomach or nausea. This is a common digestive disease and is caused by the food being pushed back into the esophagus.

Probiotics and Prebiotics

What can be done about digestive problems and digestive system diseases? One method that has been quite successful is the use of Prebiotic supplements. The stomach has healthy and unhealthy bacteria. Digestive system diseases can be the result of unhealthy bacteria. Prebiotics, although not a new product, are found in foods that are plant-based such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits. However, most people do not eat a healthy diet on a regular basis.

This is where prebiotic supplements can help as well. They provide the nourishment for probiotic bacteria to grow and become established in the bowels. Prebiotics travel through the stomach and small intestines and since they are not digested by the body, they provide nutrition for probiotic bacteria. This allows the probiotic bacteria to take up residence in the colon and get rid of disease causing bacteria.

Probiotics were discovered almost 100 years ago and the name means “for life”. They work totally different than antibiotics. Although antibiotics are helpful for fighting disease they often attack bacteria that is beneficial to the body as well as the harmful bacteria. Probiotics are helpful for digestive system diseases because they elevate the growth of these healthy bacteria.

With the many digestive problems that are experienced due to a variety of causes as well as using antibiotics to treat these problems, it is no wonder the digestive system can become out of balance. The discomfort – bloating, constipation, diarrhea and many others – can lead to many problems, including trouble with the immune system.

Eating a healthy diet and the use of prebiotic supplements can return the natural balance of the digestive system, thereby resulting in reducing these symptoms. The supplements will allow the body to regulate itself and many common problems can be eradicated, resulting in a healthier you.
